Masks
Masks,
A tool used to seal our ugly truths,
We wear them all the time,
Out of fear and shame,
We never dare remove them,
We choose to remain concealed,
Wearing a mask to disguise ourselves,
Because we can’t stand to see our face,
Because it reminds us of everything we aren’t,
Seeing us for who we are,
With our flaws and imperfections,
And we can’t stand it,
So we dawn a mask,
To conceal the our flaws,
Denying who we are,
And pretending to be someone else,
Casting ourselves in roles we were never meant to play,
A role that wasn’t meant to be ours,
Even though it was the role we desired,
Covering the truth in a vale of lie we want to believe,
But,
Deep down,
No matter how real the mask may look,
At the end of the day,
It just a patch of plastic covering your face,
The truth you keep buried in endless lies you tell yourself and the world,
Lies you want to believe with all your heart,
But you just can’t,
Because no matter how you try to hide it,
You will always be able to see it,
Hidden behind that patch of plastic,
Your ugly truth,
Staring back at you each time you glance at the mirror,
Others may not see it,
But you will,
And along with the mask you wear with pride,
You will see the face of shame hiding underneath,
Then suddenly the mask becomes heavy and unbearable,
With the chains of shame dangle over it,
Making you have to put in more effort hold it and keep it from falling,
Because it’s the only one that keeps the ugly and unbearable face you dread,
From being seen,
The face that is stamp given to you from birth,
That tells the world,
This is me,
Lost,
Hidden away in a mask of shame,
Plastic and fake,
Like the person that dawns it
Oh what a fate,
To deny your truth,
And yourself,
I would pity you,
But how can I,
When you don’t pity yourself
